OY VEY, MY SON IS GAY! -> SCREENING
(John Lloyd Young, star of OVMSIG and Marcus)
Thursday night I attended the screening and after-party of the film "Oy Vey My Son is Gay" in Manhattan. But before I talk about the film check out the trailer below;
I played Voyeur-azzi from the red carpet, filling in for my friend AKA Wiliam.com who was unable to attend.
I did not find this to be a gay film but rather a movie about a family that happened to have a gay son. A big distinction if you ask me. This story could be equally translated across so many other areas such as a child who decides to date someone with HIV, of a different race, of a different religion, etc. The list goes on and on.
There is a scene at the synagogue where Nelson is finally able to come out to his family and it is perfectly synchronized with the breaking of the glass tradition at a Jewish wedding. I couldn't help but think of the symbolism behind this. The parents dreams of a straight son, one who would go on to provide grandchildren also being shattered at that very moment.
Lainie Kazan (above), who plays the Mother, absolutely steals the show. She could not have played a Jewish mother any better than she did. I want to see Lainie go on The Wendy Williams Show... How YOU Doin?
Funniest moments from the film
When Jai's character pulls out a homemade rainbow yamaka while attending a Jewish wedding with Nelson and meeting Nelson's family for the first time. Nelson's dad loved the yamaka a lot and had no idea that rainbow colors means gay!
Nelson tells his dad "We are on the same page of 2 different books" after his dad brings up how much Nelson liked watching football together at their favorite sports bar. Nelson goes on to explain "dad you like football and I like watching the guys." HA!
The gorgeous Miss Carmen Electra also attended the screening. Here she is with the boys on the red carpet.
And now some red carpet dish!
On the carpet Jai Rodriguez confessed his addiction to The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Lockdown and all
other reality TV shows. He also divulged his best fitness tip - do an abs workout first thing in the morning. Even before you eat, drink, brush your teeth. Mix up the exercises but do 20 of every kind of ab work out you can think of.
John Lloyd Young (who plays Nelson) is actually straight. OVMSIG is his first film since moving to LA. You might recognize him from Jersey Boys, for which he won a Tony, or from his guest appearance on GLEE as a "former wood shop instructor with a voice of gold." He revealed that he does Kung Fu and lots of stretching as his workout. John considers Kung Fu to be a spiritual work out as well as a physical one. His best fitness tip is "don't eat late at night."
John and Jai had to shoot a major scene on their first day of filming. They both thought they were going to get fired because they didn't get time to build any sort of chemistry with each other. Obvi, it worked out and they made a cute couple in the film.
Every interviewer asked John & Jai for their thoughts on Lindsay Lohan which i found to be annoying (Shouldn't you ask if they even know her first?). They also asked for their advice to her. John's response was really good, he said "find someone who doesn't tell you yes all the time. You need someone around you who will tell you no especially when you get to her level of fame."
There was even a Queer Eye for the Straight Guy reunion.
Kyan showed up a little later. Carson was said to be away filming on Oprah and couldn't make it.
*Special thanks to David who made the entire night happen without a single hitch.
Final note: The director is still looking for distribution but in the meantime it will be showing for a full week in LA sometime soon. Definitely go and see it if you live or are visiting LA.
